In the crumbling estate overlooking the fog-draped city, Isabella stood by the window, her fingers tracing the faded lace of her gown. The evening light cast long shadows across the room, painting her silhouette in tones of amber and ash. Outside, the distant rooftops and spires blurred into darkness, and the sky hung heavy, pregnant with secrets and storm clouds. 
Isabella's eyes were fixed beyond the horizon, but her thoughts lingered in the past, where echoes of laughter and music once filled these walls. The estate, now silent and forgotten, had been a place of light and warmth, a sanctuary from the world. She had danced in these halls, her skirts sweeping marble floors, her heart light and unburdened. But that was before the war, before betrayal turned joy to ash and shadows crept into every corner. 
She closed her eyes, and for a moment, she could almost feel his hand in hers, warm and sure. Gabriel’s voice, low and steady, whispering promises against her hair, vows that time and death had shattered. His letters, inked with longing and hope, lay bundled in a drawer, untouched for years but never forgotten. Each one a reminder of what was, of what could never be again. 
Thunder growled in the distance, and a gust of wind rattled the windowpanes, pulling Isabella from her reverie. Her fingers tightened on the sill, knuckles white, as if by holding on she could keep the memories from slipping away. But shadows moved in the corridor, and she knew she could not linger in the past forever. 
Drawing a deep breath, Isabella turned from the window, her steps soft but resolute. There were candles to light, letters to burn, ghosts to lay to rest. The past would not release her easily, but neither would she surrender to its hold. Not tonight. 

And as the first drops of rain streaked the glass, the house sighed—walls settling, shadows lengthening—bearing witness to the woman who stood alone, unbroken, and unafraid.
